Knights of Columbus to host spaghetti dinner
The Knights of Columbus Fr. Venglaric Council 11915 at St. Charles in Boardman will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on Jan. 31 from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the church hall. The event, which will include a basket raffle, will feature spaghetti and meatballs at a cost of $8 for adults, $5 for children that are 6-12 years of age and children under 6-years of age will eat for free. The dinner will also include a salad, bread and butter, drink and cake. Carry out orders will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Also, the Knights’ delicious spaghetti sauce and meatballs will be available for separate purchase beginning at 10 a.m. the morning of the dinner. One can bring one’s own container, or the Knights can provide one. Proceeds will benefit the council’s charitable endeavors.
Mahoning Valley Ulster Project hosts Wine Taste event
The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project is set to host its annual Wine Taste on Feb. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield from 2-5 p.m. This is a major fundraiser for the Ulster Project. Tickets to the event are $30 per person or $50 per couple, and include a wine and beer taste, light appetizers, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and giveaways. The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program, which brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. The program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. MCCTC receives Grant
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has received the Advanced Career Pathways Grant For Clean Energy Technology for the 2016-17 school year. This grant is provided by the Ohio Department of Education and the Southern Regional Education Board’s High Schools That Work, supporting new career-tech programs relevant to the 21st century workplace. Each four-course Advanced Career pathway curriculum is rich with hands-on projects that stimulate students and help them understand the relationship between theory and application. Advanced Career combines college-ready core academic content with hands-on, project-based assignments centered on a defined career focus. The grant money will go towards new equipment, professional development for staff and Clean Energy Technology curriculum for the new ninth and tenth-grade STEM school opening in the 2016-17 school year.
Mill Creek Champter of ABWA to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 2 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The guest speaker will be Dr. Friedrich Koknat, Youngstown State University professor emeritus in chemistry, who will be narrating on Love Stamps as he is a representative of the Mahoning Valley Stamp Club. Networking begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be creamed chicken on biscuits, roast beef, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, salads, bread and butter and beverages and Valentine cream pastry for dessert. BPJWL to meet on Feb. 1
The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman. Members are to wear something red in recognition of Women’s Heart month. Preparations for the” Farewell To Downton Abbey Tea” on March 6 at Boardman Park in the Stambaugh Room from 1-3 p.m. will be finalized. Members are asked to bring a tea item for a tea basket that will be given away at a special drawing during the afternoon tea. Hostesses for the month are Debbie Weaver and Derrie Wilkes, who will be sharing food from their heritage. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Mercy Health offers free ‘Health at Home’ workshop
Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will offer a one-hour workshop, Health at Home, on Feb. 16 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. until noon in the Woodland Room. The workshop and all materials are free, but reservations are required. Call 330-480-3070 to make reservations. The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems, as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. Health at Home workshops will also be offered at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on March 17.
Local students named to the Dean’s List at Miami University
Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for first semester 2015-2016 have been named to the dean’s list recognizing academic performance. Students from Boardman to earn this honor were Carly Gemma and Jonathan Ouimet.
Kent State names Fall 2015 President’s List
Kent State recently recognized more than 950 undergraduate students who have been named to the President’s list for Fall 2015. Undergraduate students who obtain a 4.00 GPA while maintaining 15 or more credit hours during the fall qualify to receive this honor. Students from Boardman to receive this distinction were Ciara Oslin, Courtney Sage, Kristy Nguyen, Marni Altman and Tara Rogers.
Kiraly named to President’s List
Capital University recently announced that Emily Kiraly of Boardman was named to the President’s List at Capital University for the fall 2015 semester.
BHS French Club helps brighten the holidays
Recently, the French Club of Boardman High School hosted a Canned Food Drive to benefit the Rescue Mission of Youngstown. The drive generated 2,000 pounds of food, almost doubling the amount collected in the previous year. Taking first place in the challenge was Moris Jadue’s second period class, averaging 32 cans per student. The hull was delivered before the students left for their winter break. According to workers at the rescue mission, the French Club provided items that were “exactly what they needed” to help families this holiday season.
Night Owl Story Time
There will be an evening story time for children ages 3-5 on Feb. 2, 16 and 23 at 6 p.m. at the Boardman library. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories, and a craft activity.
Sensory Story Time
Join the Boardman library on Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. for a family storytime for children of all ages with a sensory focus. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. The children will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Teens in grades 7-12 can stop by the Boardman library Jan. 25 - Feb. 6 to fill out a Super Bowl Prediction form. Answer such questions as, “Will the coin toss land heads or tails?,” “What will the first commercial be advertising?” and “Which team will call the first timeout?” The library will tally the scores and the teen with the highest score will win a $10 Dicks Sporting Goods gift card.

Guarendi to visit Boardman Schools
Ray Guarendi, humorist, clinical psychologist, author, public speaker and nationally syndicated radio host, is coming to the Boardman Schools on March 1 to speak on the topic “You are a better parent than you think.” His experience includes working with school districts, Head Start programs, mental health centers, substance abuse programs, in-patient psychiatric centers, juvenile courts and in private practice. Guarendi has both his own radio show, “The Doctor is In,” as well as a television show entering its fourth season, “Living Right with Dr. Ray.” He has also appeared on national radio and television shows such as Oprah, The 700 Club and CBS This Morning. In addition, Guarendi has written a number of books, with his most well known “You’re a Better Parent Than You Think” currently in its 28th printing. He will be speaking on March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Glenwood Middle School Auditorium. There is no charge for admission.

Younstown Shrine Club to host annual fundraiser
On Jan. 30, the Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting its annual Beer Taste. The event will include sampling of a variety of unique local and national brews, along with food, entertainment and fellowship. Wine and other beverages will also be served. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. The public is welcome to attend and proceeds, in part, go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Business and individual sponsorship opportunities available for the event. In 2015 the Youngstown Shrine Club donated more than $33,000 to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children from its events throughout the year. Youngstown Soup event to fund community projects
Jan. 30 marks the date Youngstown Soup will be hosting a community micro-granting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Mahoning County. With a donation of $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote on some of the most innovative project proposals in Youngstown. There will be four presenters who will have four minutes to share their idea on their project proposal, which will help the community in some way. Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorite soup, enjoy a 50/50 raffle and participate in a silent auction of donated goodies from the Valley’s finest businesses. At the end of the night the ballots are counted and the winner takes home the proceeds raised from the dinner to carry out their project. During the next event they will present to the community how they carried out their project. The event takes place at the Calvin Center, located at 755 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, on Jan. 30 from 6-9 p.m.
13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance
Boardman Park will be hosting its 13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or father figures who have a daughter(s) ages 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner and dancing with their little princesses. The dance will be offered on four nights: Feb. 11 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 12 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 13 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 5-8 p.m. This semi-formal dinner dance will include dinner, dancing to DJ music, a professional photo for a keepsake and a lot of dancing. Tickets will go on sale beginning Jan. 11. You may purchase your tickets at the park office, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or by calling the office at 330-726-8105. Victorian Players show rescheduled
The Victorian Players have announced the postponement of its scheduled January show, “Same Time Next Year.” The production is rescheduled for June 17-26. The Vic apologizes to its season ticket holders for any inconvenience this may cause. In the January slot, the Vic has contracted for a one-woman show performed by Carol Weakland, actress, author and storyteller. “A Date with the Bront ´ Sisters,” two one-woman shows based on “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights,” will be performed Jan. 23, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 24 and 31 at 2 p.m. at the Victorian Players Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Black History Month puzzle challenge
Find the answers to trivia questions during the month of February at the Boardman library throughout regular library hours that relate to Black History Month. For each question you get right, you’ll get a puzzle piece to add to our puzzle. See if you can finish the puzzle by the end of the month. This event is for children of all ages.
Fitness Fun story time
Join the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. for stories and activities selected from the “Eat, Play, Grow” program. This event will focus on good fun and good nutrition. Prizes and snacks will be given. This event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Kids Coalition and is for toddlers and preschoolers.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

No plans for your day off of school on Feb. 15? Children of all ages can visit the Boardman library’s Game Stations throughout regular library hours. There will be numerous tables of games set up that you can travel around to and play. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a day of games.
