Animal-rights advocates protest at hearing for Campbell woman charged with animal cruelty

CAMPBELL — About a dozen animal-rights advocates protested outside the Campbell Municipal Courthouse today before an 11 a.m hearing.

Tameka Smith, 24, of Campbell is charged with animal cruelty. Police said a dog died after being tied up last winter near A home without adequate access to food or water.

At the status hearing, Prosecutor Brian Macala and Defense lawyer James E. Lanzo said they had not reached a resolution in the case and were prepared to go trial.

Judge Patrick Cunning asked for a trial date to be set within 60 days.
