Reports said an East Dewey Avenue man led police on a foot chase Tuesday afternoon after they tried to take him into custody during a South Side traffic stop.

Antwan Teemer, 29, was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court before Magistrate Anthony Sertick on a charge of obstructing official business. He remains in the Mahoning County jail on $5,000 bond.

Reports said officers Travis Sheely and Anthony Trimble pulled over a car driven by Leon Scott, 26, of Neosho Avenue, about 3:40 p.m. in the 1300 block of Idlewood Avenue because of an improper turn. Teemer was a front-seat passenger in that car.

A records check showed Scott had a suspended driver’s license, and he was taken out of the car to be given a citation. Reports said Scott told police he had nothing illegal in the car, and he agreed to allow it to be searched.

Reports said officers found a bag of pills near where Teemer was seated, and they went to take him into custody. Reports said as he was being handcuffed, he managed to wriggle from an officer’s grip and run away.

Both Sheely and Trimble ran after Teemer, and at one point, one of them used an electronic stun weapon on him when he reached toward the front of his body, as if he had a weapon. Reports said both officers knew that Teemer has had past weapons offenses, which is why they used the stun weapon. But even though Teemer was hit, he kept going, reports said.

The officers caught up with Teemer at Idlewood and Parkwood avenues, but he refused commands to get on the ground, reports said. Reports said both officers had to take him to the ground to get him cuffed, and both officers ended up covered in mud.

Scott was issued a citation and released. Police found 23 pills in the bag, and more charges may be filed later once tests are done to determine what brand or kind of pills they are.
