Pa. teacher jailed on student-sex charge resigns

PLUM, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania high-school teacher jailed on charges he had sex with a student has resigned.

The Plum School Board on Tuesday accepted the resignation of 41-year-old Joseph Ruggieri.

He’s been suspended without pay since his arrest last year on charges of institutional sexual assault and corruption of minors. .

Ruggieri is one of three male teachers at the school charged with having sex with female students. Jason Cooper, 38, resigned in July.

Cooper and Ruggieri are scheduled for separate trials next month in Allegheny County.

Michael Cinefra, 29, a former substitute math teacher and baseball coach, was charged in September for allegedly having a relationship with a 15-year-old student.

A county grand jury has been investigating whether school district officials properly dealt with complaints about inappropriate teacher-student relationships.
