Decades later, Michigan library gets book back

HOLLAND, Mich.

A book has been returned to a library in western Michigan – 49 years later.

The borrower told the library that he was a college student in 1967 when he checked out a book about World War II from the Herrick library in Holland. He wrote in a letter that the book was stored in a trunk that hadn’t been opened until recently. He also provided a donation with his letter.

Library director Diane Kooiker declined to identify the book, the man’s name or the amount of money given to the library.

In his letter to the library, the man described it as a “modest donation” to cover what could be a “tremendous fine.”

Kooiker tells The Grand Rapids Press that honest people sometimes can misplace a book.

3 charged after lioness prowled Dubai neighborhood

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates

Three people have been charged with public endangerment over an incident that saw a lioness escape from a home in a Dubai neighborhood and prowl the streets for several hours.

Abu Dhabi’s state-run The National newspaper reported Tuesday that police say the owner of the lioness, the buyer and a middleman have been charged after the lioness escaped Thursday in Dubai’s al-Barsha neighborhood. She was safely caught and taken to the zoo.

It’s largely illegal to keep endangered or threatened wildlife as pets in the United Arab Emirates. However, The National, quoting unnamed officials, says that “exceptions are made for members of the ruling family or anyone who has official authorization and a permit.”

Keeping wild animals as pets is seen as a status symbol in the Gulf Arab states.

Germantown police say on their Facebook page that the cheese was found in Milwaukee on Friday evening. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that no one has been arrested.

A 54-foot long trailer containing the cheese was stolen early Friday from D and G Transportation in Germantown, which is northwest of Milwaukee.

A semitrailer used to steal the trailer was recovered. Police said the empty trailer was found around 10 a.m. Friday in the Milwaukee area.

It’s not clear exactly where in Milwaukee the stolen cheese was found.
