1784: In a letter to his daughter Sarah, Benjamin Franklin expresses unhappiness over the choice of the bald eagle as the symbol of America, and states his own preference: the turkey.

1788: The first European settlers in Australia, led by Capt. Arthur Phillip, land in present-day Sydney.

1837: Michigan becomes the 26th state.

1870: Virginia rejoins the Union.

1915: President Woodrow Wilson signs the Rocky Mountain National Park Act, which creates America’s 10th national park.

1925: Actor Paul Newman is born in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

1939: During the Spanish Civil War, rebel forces led by Gen. Francisco Franco capture Barcelona.

1942: The first American Expeditionary Force to go to Europe during World War II arrives in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

1950: India officially proclaims itself a republic as Rajendra Prasad takes the oath of office as president.

1962: The United States launches Ranger 3 to land scientific instruments on the moon – but the probe ends up missing its target by more than 22,000 miles.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Phantom of the Opera” opens at Broadway’s Majestic Theater.

1998: President Bill Clinton forcefully denies having an affair with a former White House intern, telling reporters, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”

2005: A U.S. Marine helicopter crashes in western Iraq, killing 30 Marines and a Navy medic aboard.

2006: Saudi Arabia recalls its ambassador from Denmark to protest caricatures of the prophet Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper. (Protests spread across the Muslim world for weeks, and dozens of people were killed.)

2011: Speaking in Manitowoc, Wis., President Barack Obama campaigns vigorously for his revamped economic message, warning that other countries are grasping for first place in the global marketplace as theU.S. falls down on the job.

2015: A blizzard dumps heavy snow on parts of the Northeast but largely spares New York City, which had shut down in preparation for the storm.

1991: The city of Warren has asked Browning-Ferris Industries to better filter the water from its medical-waste incinerator before sending it to Warren’s wastewater- treatment plant.

Owners say Ghossain Mid-East Bakery will be rebuilt on Youngstown’s South Side after the Market Street business is destroyed in a $500,000 fire.

1976: Members of the Brookfield Federation of Teachers go on strike for the third time in four years after the board of education passes a resolution to stop negotiations over the teachers’ demand for an $8,800 base salary.

About 200 members of the City Workers Association, a division of Associated Trades and Crafts, walk off their jobs in Youngstown City Hall, wastewater-treatment plant, airport and street department, protesting a 5-cent-per-hour wage increase offered by the city.

An explosion rocks Youngstown’s East Side and demolishes a house at 3127 McGuffey Road owned by Charles Green. Two neighboring structures are damaged.

1966: Charles G. Burrows, who served as secretary of Aut Mori Grotto for 30 years, as business manager for 20 years and as a deputy Mahoning County auditor for seven years, dies after a long illness. He also worked for 18 years in banking and 30 years in real estate.

The Volunteer Service Bureau refers 420 volunteers – 146 adults and 274 teenagers – during 1965, reports executive director Garnet Moyer. The volunteers provided 31,000 hours of service.

Mayor Anthony B. Flask appoints two cadet firemen, Richard Simmerlink and Anthony DiMuzio to fill positions opened by promotions.

1941: The Youngstown district girl who is chosen “Miss Television 1941” at the Vindicator- WFMJ Home Show will win three days in New York City and a screen test at NB C Television studios.

The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Ficocelli will present a concert at Hiram College’s Festival series.

All students living in the Brownlee Woods district and entering their first year of high school must register at Woodrow Wilson High School. Previously, those students living closer to Struthers were permitted to register at Struthers High School.
