Charges are pending against a man arrested early Sunday after an officer heard a woman scream and ran into a house and found the suspect on top of a woman.
Officers were called about 2:30 a.m. Sunday to a home in the 1500 block of Rosewood Lane on the East Side on a report of a man who had a gun beating up a woman. Reports said when they arrived, they heard a woman scream, and officer Malik Mostella ran inside the home and went upstairs where the scream had been heard.
Reports said Mostella found the suspect on top of a woman, and when he entered the room, the man stood up. The man, however, refused to obey other commands by Mostella and walked toward him, and the two began struggling, as Mostella was also worried about the gun the suspect was reported to have, reports said.
Reports said other officers came in and helped Mostella control the suspect and take him into custody.
Police searched the room where Mostella found the suspect, and they found a loaded 7.62 mm handgun, reports said.
The victim told police she and another woman were in the home when the suspect came to the door and knocked, wanting money. The victim said they refused to give the man any money, but he forced his way inside and attacked one of the women, reports said.
The gun recovered by police is the 18th recovered in the city this year.
The suspect is in the Mahoning County jail on pending charges of aggravated burglary and resisting arrest. The investigation continues.
