Because of a watermain break, a boil-water advisory was issued for Yankee Run Road between 802 Yankee Run Road and Lincoln Avenue in the township at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

A boil advisory means to boil tap water used for drinking or cooking to a rolling boil for 3 to 5 minutes before using.

Roof to be replaced at penitentiary

COLUMBUS

The state Controlling Board released nearly $3.9 million for a roof replacement at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown.

The roof at the prison was installed more than 17 years ago when the facility first opened and has been patched several times. According to documents, however, “Water is leaking into the building, causing damage to the ceilings, walls and floors.”

The replacement project will include about 98,800-square-feet of roofing, plus repairs to building cracks.

Advanced Industrial Building of Massillon submitted the low bid for the project.

In other business, lawmakers released more than $1.4 million for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning replacements at Kent State University at Trumbull. Prout Boiler, Heating & Welding Inc. of Youngstown is handling the work.

Bridge repairs set

Repairs to a Glendale Avenue bridge over Squaw Creek are set to begin in the summer.

The bridge, which is closed to traffic, is near State Street. The city plans to replace the bridge’s culvert and install a new guardrail. State funding will cover the estimated $396,000 construction cost, with 95 percent paid by the Ohio Municipal Bridge Fund and 5 percent paid by the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Human trafficking arrests made

COLUMBUS

Local law enforcement made more human trafficking-related arrests and received more tips from concerned residents about potential forced sex or labor crimes last year compared to 2014, according to statistics released by a state panel Monday.

Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine, whose office formed the Human Trafficking Commission to address what is referred to as modern day slavery, said the results show residents are more aware of the problem.

“People are now starting to understand human trafficking is not confined to a foreign country,” DeWine told a gathering of the commission in downtown Columbus.

Among other statistics released as part of the annual report was that officers conducted more than 100 human-trafficking investigations in 2015 that led to 104 arrests and 33 criminal convictions. That was up from 85 investigations, 98 arrests and 17 convictions in 2014.

OVI arrests made

Township police made two impaired-driving arrests over the weekend.

Darlene Childs, 52, of Amherst Avenue, was arrested Thursday night. She was cited on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, hit-and-run, failure to control and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle after she purportedly caused an accident on Glenwood Avenue.

Joseph Soltesiz III, 33, of Wildwood Drive, was arrested Saturday night after he purportedly struck a Glenwood Avenue apartment complex with his vehicle while drunk. He is charged with OVI, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to control and a seat-belt violation. According to police, he has two prior OVI convictions from 2010 and 2011.

Both suspects are scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court today.

Grant for sidewalk

POLAND

Poland township will receive $131,200 in grant funding from Eastgate Regional Council of Governments to add a sidewalk on Dobbins Road.

The township will pay $32,800 of the total project cost. The project will add a sidewalk on Dobbins from state Route 170 to the Tuscany development.

Township officials say the project, slated for construction in 2019, will tie together a previous project that added a sidewalk along 170 from Nesbitt Street to Dobbins.

Gov. John Kasich appointed a Canfield man to the Eastern Gateway Community College trustee board. James M. Gasior’s term began Monday and runs through Oct. 16, 2020.

Man hits cruiser

YOUNGSTOWN

A man with a suspended license picked up another citation Monday after reports said he hit a police cruiser about 11:30 a.m. at West Delason and Oakhill avenues.

Aaron Agee, 39, of Winona Drive, also has a citation for running a red light.

The officer who was driving the cruiser was not injured. His cruiser was towed for accident investigators to examine.

Agee was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be examined for any potential injuries.

Academic competition

WARREN

Students in various grade levels will engage in an academic competition that challenges them to answer questions in all areas of study. Students from all 20 schools in Trumbull County will participate in this competition, which will take place at Lordstown High School, 1824 Salt Springs Road.

The competition is organized and sponsored by Trumbull County Educational Service Center volunteers.

The Elementary Prep Bowl Competition for grades 5 and 6 will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with a makeup date of Feb. 6, the High School Prep Bowl Competition for grades 9 to 12 will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27, with a makeup date of March 5, and the Middle School Prep Bowl Competition for grades 7 to 8 will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 12, with a make up date of March 19.
