Trustees sport Broncos attire for a bad bet
AUSTINTOWN
Township officials sported unconventional attire due to a lost bet with former trustee Lisa Oles.
Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli, park Supervisor Todd Shaffer and trustees Jim Davis and Rick Stauffer wore Denver Broncos shirts for the meeting Monday, rather than their usual suits, to pay for losing a friendly wager.
Davis challenged Oles, who now lives in Denver, at the Jan. 11 township meeting to wear the winning team’s shirt for the Denver-Pittsburgh game for a picture on Facebook.
“We are men of our word, and we are wearing our Denver Broncos colors,” Davis said.
Crivelli showed he was being a man of his word in policing properties of the township.
“We do our best to try and remove the blight from the neighborhoods,” Crivelli said.
Crivelli said a property on Staatz Drive will be the 72nd home demolished in the last four years based on resolutions passed by the trustees.
Another property on Burkey Road sustained substantial damage in fire Sunday with the loss amount still undetermined.
Fire Chief Andy Frost said although no one was injured at 4438 Burkey Road, the loss is enough to have him prepared to reach out to churches for donation purposes to help the family.
In other discussion, the YMCA is seeking property in Austintown to possibly build a facility.
“Things are still in place, and things are still happening, and we are still looking for large donors to make those things happen,” Stauffer said. “I always tell people, ‘Imagine the Boardman Y [YMCA] being placed somewhere in Austintown. That’s what we’re looking for, and that’s going to happen,’ ... hopefully in the near future.”
As well as developmental growth, Jim Henshaw, senior center director, said there was also growth in the patronage of the Austintown Senior Center.
“We have almost 1,800 members and our fencing class has doubled in size,” Henshaw said.
After the first successful shooting class Jan. 11, Henshaw said there has been enough interest at the senior center for another. The next class will take place at 10 a.m. Feb. 8 at American Indoor Shooting Range, 12288 Mahoning Ave., North Jackson.
