Four students earn NAACP Youngstown scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN
Four young people earned scholarships at the recent NAACP Youngstown Branch’s 97th Freedom Fund Banquet.
The Youngstown Branch established “Supporting and Empowering Families Advocating for Educational Excellence” as its No. 1 priority.
The four students each received a $1,000 scholarship, marking the first time the organization has awarded scholarships.
The scholarships are in honor of Rev. Elizabeth Powell of World Fellowship Church. The Rev. Ms. Powell was a force in the community and a longtime local supporter of the NAACP.
The scholarships were given to Marcus Lard, Alexandria Reed-Frank, Katera Harris and Maryam Dennis.
NAACP Youngstown Branch officials say that the young scholars are proof that when families and teachers work together to support student achievement, excellence is the outcome.
