CHAMPION
An attempt by the Ohio State Highway Patrol to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on state Route 45 in Champion resulted in the suspect leading police on a high-speed chase through portions of four communities before he deliberately rammed an patrol cruiser.
According to the OSHP report, the chase started at 10:32 p.m. Friday in Champion, moved into Southington Township where stop sticks were used, flattening the suspect vehicle’s right front tire, but not stopping it. The pursuit continued onto U.S. Route 422, traveling east into Warren Township and then into Warren City, where speeds slowed as the pursuit entered a residential area.
The suspect intentionally rammed a marked OSHP cruiser, which was then used to strike the suspect vehicle, disabling it on the side of Parkman Road and Union Street in the city’s southwest section.
After the cars stopped, the suspect fled on foot. However, after a brief pursuit through the neighborhood he was apprehended, using a taser.
The suspect, who received minor injuries, was transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment and then incarcerated in Trumbull County Jail. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending. The name of the suspect was not made public.
The pursuit covered 15 miles and lasted about 13 minutes. Champion police, Warren police and the Trumbull County Sheriff’s department assisted in the pursuit, the OSHP reported.
