Woman pleads guilty to raping boy

WARREN

Regina L. Turner, 41, of Irishtown South Road in Farmdale, pleaded guilty Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to raping a boy, 14, in September at a party in Kinsman.

She will be sentenced by Judge Ronald Rice after the county Adult Probation Department conducts a pre-sentence investigation. She is in the county jail and could get more than 10 years in prison.

Kinsman police said Turner sexually assaulted the boy inside the house while an outdoor party was taking place. She was left alone on a couch in the house because of intoxication, police said.

Fire destroys patio

CORTLAND

An 11:18 a.m. fire Friday at the El Torero restaurant, 105 S. High St., destroyed the patio, but firefighters stopped the fire from damaging the restaurant, which remains open.

Capt. Todd Price of the Cortland Fire Department said there were people in the restaurant and in two apartments upstairs at the time the fire began. Everyone got out, and there were no injuries.

An estimate of the amount of damage was not available, and the investigation into the cause is continuing, Price said.

Passers-by first noticed the fire and called 911, and firefighters in the fire station close by arrived in about one minute, Price said. Price and Cortland Fire Chief David Rea were in the chief’s car when the call came in and arrived 30 seconds after the call, but the patio already was fully involved, Price said.

Murder indictment

WARREN

A Trumbull County grand jury indicted Ricky Green, 59, of Wakefield Creek Road in Farmdale, of murder with a firearm in the Sunday night death of his wife, Janell, 56, at their home.

Green was arraigned on the charge Friday morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. He pleaded not guilty, and his bond was set at $2 million. He remains in the county jail.

Green called 911 about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, saying he had just shot his wife and believed she was dead. Sheriff’s deputies arrived a short time later and found her dead and arrested Green without incident.

If convicted, Green could get 18 years to life in prison. His first pretrial hearing will take place at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 8 before Judge Peter Kontos.

Odors explained

POLAND

Cold weather is to blame for odors that people might have noticed coming from the Republic Services Carbon-operated Carbon Limestone Landfill, the company said.

Pumps that the company uses to extract gas and water that come out of wells at the landfill are frozen. The company operates 300 wells, gases from which are made up mostly of methane and carbon dioxide, and a small portion of which are contaminants from the landfill that can create an odor.

Gas extracted from the company’s 300 wells is used to create electricity that powers roughly 18,000 homes.

“We’re desperately trying to get those things thawed out,” Mike Heher, Republic Services division manager, said Friday.
