Blue Jackets coach breaks ribs

COLUMBUS

Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella has broken two ribs falling after a collision with forward Rene Bourque during an outdoor practice and will not coach Saturday night at Boston.

Associate coach Craig Hartsburg will lead Columbus against the Bruins, the team said Friday. Tortorella’s status for Monday night against the Montreal Canadiens is unknown.

The injury occurred about 20 minutes into the Blue Jackets’ first practice at a temporary rink built for public skating in McFerson Commons, across the street from the Blue Jackets’ Nationwide Arena. The team practiced there to promote the opening of Winter Park.

Bourque was part of a 3-on-3 drill, and Tortorella was along the left boards near center ice when Bourque took a tumble and undercut his coach, who was blindsided.

Tortorella went down hard on his back and was prone for several minutes as he was attended to by the team’s medical staff.

Raonic dedicates Open win to shooting victims

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Milos Raonic has dedicated his third-round victory at the Australian Open to victims of a shooting in Canada which left four people dead and at least two injured.

A gunman opened fire at the La Loche Community School in a remote aboriginal community in Saskatchewan, and at a second location.

“Today, before I stepped out on court it was a difficult day back home,” the 25-year-old Canadian tennis star, his voice sounding emotional at times, said after his win over Viktor Troicki on Saturday.

“Unfortunately in Saskatchewan in a very small community there was a shooting at a high school, so I want to take a moment and give thoughts to that community, the family, the students and the school affected. We wish you all the best.”
