Dettelbach resigns as US attorney
CLEVELAND
Steven M. Dettelbach, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Ohio since 2009, has submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama and Attorney General Loretta Lynch, effective Feb. 5.
Dettelbach, 50, of Solon, said he plans to re-enter private law practice.
As the top federal prosecutor covering the Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and Toledo areas, Dettelbach has focused on corruption, violent crime, felons illegally possessing guns, and fraud, while also making civil rights and cybercrime new priorities.
He brought together hospitals, doctors, law enforcement, treatment professionals, people in recovery and others to attempt to find a solution to the district’s heroin and opioid epidemic.
Lily Pond reopens
YOUNGSTOWN
The Lily Pond in Mill Creek Park, which has been closed to the public for several months, will reopen to the public today.
The park has completed work on improvements that include a new arrival plaza, a boardwalk leading to an observation deck, a bridge over the spillway and more. The project has made the pond more accessible to visitors of all abilities, park officials said.
Students to compete in Power of the Pen
Canfield
Canfield is hosting the district Power of the Pen Tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Canfield Village Middle School, 42 Wadsworth St.
There will be about 125 seventh- and eighth-grade writers from 11 schools competing in the statewide creative-writing competition.
During the competition, students are given a writing prompt in each of three rounds and have 40 minutes to produce a piece of writing. The prompts are judged in rank and quality points, and students can earn individual and team awards.
The top 50 percent of writers will advance to the regional tournament at Malone University in Canton.
Man hit by car
YOUNGSTOWN
Reports said a 38-year-old Austintown man suffered a broken leg about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday after he was run over by a car police said was driven by his ex-girlfriend.
The victim told police he was arguing with the woman over a missing check when she ran him over at Oak Hill Avenue and High Street on the South Side.
A witness told police he was driving on Oak Hill and saw a car swerving before it hit a man who was walking north on the sidewalk. The man was smashed into the windshield of the vehicle before rolling off, and the vehicle drove away. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
