CHS Choral Department perform holiday concert

The Canfield High School Choral Department had its annual Winter Concert on Dec. 10. Under the direction of Choir Director Kelly Scurich, the Concert Choir, One Octave High Choir and Canfield Chamber Ensemble performed holiday songs for family and friends. The Canfield Village Middle School Cardinal Chorale, under the direction of Stephanie Summers, also performed at the concert.
Clare Neff, Canfield Choral Boosters president, welcomed the audience to the concert.
The Concert Choir opened the performance with “Medley Christmas” by Ron Howard and followed with “Ding Dong! Merrily on High,” arranged by Ed Lojeski. The choir closed their portion of the concert with an energetic “Hot Chocolate” from “The Polar Express,” arranged by Roger Emerson.
The Cardinal Chorale then performed “Sing Me to Winter,” by Julie Gardner Bray, with soloist Claire Audia.
The One Octave Higher Choir then took the stage to perform “Angelus ad Virginem,” arranged by Philip Lawson. The choir continued with “On Winter’s Eve” by John Parker and Ruth Schram and finished with a spirited “Santa Baby” by Phil and Tony Springer.
The Canfield Chamber Ensemble began their performance with “Hodie Christus Natus Est” by Healey Willan and then performed “Believe” from “The Polar Express,” arranged by Teena Chinn. The ensemble closed their portion of the concert with a bright and quick “Jingle Bells,” arranged by Audrey Snyder.
At the conclusion of the Canfield Chamber Ensemble’s performance, all choirs converged on stage and joined together to sing “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” arranged by Harry Simeone. Soloists included Victor Labra, Nicole Schmidt, Lexi Denny, Emma Hartshorn and Jared Cross. Speakers included Ally Cooper, Harmeet Kaur, Taylor Mead, Alexandria Okelberry, Maddie Urig and Rosie Bresson. Dancers included Lauren Cline, Cara DeChurch, Emily Dunko, Jaclyn Edelstein, Lauren Johnson, Alana Marzich, Jaimie Ritter, Kat Roman and Carmen Seybert.
The close the Winter Concert, all choirs sang “Silent Night” by Paul Ajolund with soloist Camille Bagnola. In keeping with tradition, alumni who had studied under Scurich who were in attendance were invited to join the choirs on stage.
The choreographer for the concert was Scurich, with Kay Williams and Thomas Scurich serving as paraprofessionals. Accompanists were Ronnie Sue Gregory and Courtney Lawson, with Nicole Schmidt and Maddie Urig serving as student conductors. Student accompanists included Emma Kadilak, Jessica Lee, Max Lee, Jonathan Scurich and Allyson Viano, with Adrian Labra, Drew Scalzo and Ryan DiThomas serving as instrumentalists.
The Canfield High School choirs will present Disney Spectacular Jan. 30. The Choral Boosters winter event will feature a tasting menu from various local restaurants and food establishments and all high school choirs performing music from Disney classics. The tasting event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, with the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. For more information, reservations or tickets, call 330-702-7128.
