Guarendi to visit Boardman Schools

Ray Guarendi, humorist, clinical psychologist, author, public speaker and nationally syndicated radio host, is coming to the Boardman Schools on March 1 to speak on the topic “You are a better parent than you think.” His experience includes working with school districts, Head Start programs, mental health centers, substance abuse programs, in-patient psychiatric centers, juvenile courts and in private practice. Guarendi has both his own radio show, “The Doctor is In,” as well as a television show entering its fourth season, “Living Right with Dr. Ray.” He has also appeared on national radio and television shows such as Oprah, The 700 Club and CBS This Morning. In addition, Guarendi has written a number of books, with his most well known “You’re a Better Parent Than You Think” currently in its 28th printing. He will be speaking on March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Glenwood Middle School Auditorium. There is no charge for admission.

Kent State Salem announces President’s, Dean’s Lists

Dr. Steve Nameth, dean of Kent State University at Salem, announced the students named to the fall 2015 President’s and Dean’s lists. To qualify for the President’s List, students must have a 4.0 grade point average and must have completed 15 hours during the semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must earn a 3.40 or greater grade point average and must have completed 12 or more credit hours for the semester, the majority at the Salem Campus. Students from Boardman to achieve this distinction are Lisa Jurus - Dean’s List, Jordyn Nenadich - Dean’s List and Pamela Pierce - Dean’s List.

Younstown Shrine Club to host annual fundraiser

On Jan. 30, the Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting its annual Beer Taste. The event will include sampling of a variety of unique local and national brews, along with food, entertainment and fellowship. Wine and other beverages will also be served. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. The public is welcome to attend and proceeds, in part, go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Business and individual sponsorship opportunities available for the event. In 2015 the Youngstown Shrine Club donated more than $33,000 to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children from its events throughout the year. Lego my library

Meet at 10 a.m. on Feb. 20 and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, age 6 and up.

Basket raffle helps dogs

Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a basket raffle on Jan. 25 from 4-8 p.m. at Quaker Steak & Lube, located at 2191 Millennium Blvd. in Cortland. Have dinner and a drink with friends who are working together to help the dogs of Trumbull and Mahoning counties. Youngstown Soup event to fund community projects

Jan. 30 marks the date Youngstown Soup will be hosting a community micro-granting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Mahoning County. With a donation of $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote on some of the most innovative project proposals in Youngstown. There will be four presenters who will have four minutes to share their idea on their project proposal, which will help the community in some way. Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorite soup, enjoy a 50/50 raffle and participate in a silent auction of donated goodies from the Valley’s finest businesses. At the end of the night the ballots are counted and the winner takes home the proceeds raised from the dinner to carry out their project. During the next event they will present to the community how they carried out their project. The event takes place at the Calvin Center, located at 755 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, on Jan. 30 from 6-9 p.m.

Fitness Fun story time

Join the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. for stories and activities selected from the “Eat, Play, Grow” program. This event will focus on good fun and good nutrition. Prizes and snacks will be given. This event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Kids Coalition and is for toddlers and preschoolers.

13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance

Boardman Park will be hosting its 13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or father figures who have a daughter(s) ages 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner and dancing with their little princesses.

The dance will be offered on four nights: Feb. 11 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 12 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 13 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 5-8 p.m. This semi-formal dinner dance will include dinner, dancing to DJ music, a professional photo for a keepsake and a lot of dancing. Tickets will go on sale beginning Jan. 11. You may purchase your tickets at the park office, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or by calling the office at 330-726-8105. You may also purchase your tickets online at boardmanpark.com. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Tickets for Boardman residents are $40 per couple, non-residents are $50 per couple, $20 for additional Boardman child and $25 additional non-Boardman resident child.

Players show rescheduled

The Victorian Players have announced the postponement of its scheduled January show, “Same Time Next Year.” The production is rescheduled for June 17-26. The Vic apologizes to its season ticket holders for any inconvenience this may cause. In the January slot, the Vic has contracted for a one-woman show performed by Carol Weakland, actress, author and storyteller. “A Date with the Bront ´ Sisters,” two one-woman shows based on “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights,” will be performed Jan. 23, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 24 and 31 at 2 p.m. at the Victorian Players Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Black History Month puzzle challenge

Find the answers to trivia questions during the month of February at the Boardman library throughout regular library hours that relate to Black History Month. For each question you get right, you’ll get a puzzle piece to add to our puzzle. See if you can finish the puzzle by the end of the month. This event is for children of all ages.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Game Stations

No plans for your day off of school on Feb. 15? Children of all ages can visit the Boardman library’s Game Stations throughout regular library hours. There will be numerous tables of games set up that you can travel around to and play. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a day of games.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas, or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library at 11 a.m. on Jan. 25. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects).

Super Bowl 50 predictions

Teens can stop by the Boardman library during regular library hours between Jan. 25 and Feb. 6 to fill out a Super Bowl Prediction form. Answer such questions as these: Will the coin toss land heads or tails? What will the first commercial be advertising? Which team will call the first timeout? The library will tally the scores after the event, and the teen with the highest score will win a $10 Dicks Sporting Goods gift card.

Night Owl story time

An evening story time for children ages 3-5 will take place at the Boardman library at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30 minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Mini-Makerspace: Snap Circuits

Make learning a snap with Snap Circuits at the Boardman library Jan. 25-30. All week long during library hours, borrow one of the library’s four Snap Circuit kits. Follow the diagrams to build projects like radios, voice recorders, doorbells and more. When you’re done, unsnap the pieces and turn them back in. All Snap Circuits products are for children ages 8 and up.
