Warren to use funds to demolish homes
WARREN
The city plans to use its share of the estimated $7 million to $8 million in new federal money coming to Trumbull County for blight removal to demolish 279 homes.
The city has the majority of vacant homes in the county and is hopeful it will receive the lion’s share of the money, said Jim Graham, city council president.
Trumbull received $4.9 million of the $80 million given to Ohio in the first funding round, and the state is expected to receive and distribute an additional $150 million to $200 million for blight removal, according 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.
Treasury officials have allowed this money to be used for blight removal in selected states that suffered the most from the foreclosure crisis.
Candidate information will be sent to state
WARREN
The Trumbull County Board of Elections gathered the last of the materials to be sent to the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office relating to the candidacy of David Cook for Trumbull County commissioner.
Cook, of Warren, was initially ruled ineligible to run in the Democratic primary against incumbent Dan Polivka, but the result changed after an appeal hearing, when board of elections members split 2-2.
In the case of a tie vote, the matter is sent to Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican, to break the tie. The elections board prepared a packet Tuesday that included a transcript of the appeal hearing, other documents and letters from board of elections members — one from the two voting to remove Cook and one from the two voting to keep him on the ballot. Cook was initially ruled ineligible because his handwriting was unclear in one area on his petitions.

YOUNGSTOWN
Reports say a Burbank Avenue woman was cited Tuesday for the second time within six days for having crack pipes on her.
Jennifer Coyier, 31, received a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia after she was pulled over at about 5:20 p.m. at South and Dewey avenues for an improper turn. Reports said vice squad officers who pulled her over saw a crack pipe inside her car, and when it was taken out of the car, they found two more in a bag on the floor.
On Jan. 13, Coyier also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia after vice squad officers pulled her over on Samuel Street near South Avenue for an undisclosed traffic violation. Reports said she had a crack pipe in her hand when she was stopped.
In both cases, she was issued a citation and released with a court date.
Police arrest man accused of firing gun
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested a man early Tuesday evening after a report of a fight with a gun in the 800 block of Detroit Avenue.
Officers were called to the street at about 6:45 p.m., when a man told them he was trying to get inside his South Side home there to get his belongings, but no one would let him in. The man told police that as he was walking away from the home, he heard a door open, then looked at the house and saw a man later identified as Victor Caban, 36, his stepfather, standing in an open window.
According to police, the man told police that Caban fired two shots in the air and pointed the gun at him before the man ran away.
Police found three spent .45-caliber shell casings underneath a window of the home, reports said. Police said Caban denied firing a gun, but police arrested him on charges of felonious assault and discharging a firearm within city limits. They took him to the Mahoning County jail.
