Deadline for homestead exemptions for seniors, disabled is June 6

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Auditor’s Office is accepting applications for real-estate tax reductions and homestead exemptions, for which this year’s application deadline is June 6.

The owner-occupancy tax reduction is available to those who own and occupy their homes as their principal place of residence.

The homestead exemption for senior citizens, age 65 and older, and people who are disabled, who own and occupy their homes and meet income-eligibility requirements, shields $25,000 of the fair-market value of their homes from property taxes.

The exemption for veterans with 100-percent service-connected disabilities, shields up to $50,000 of the fair-market value of their homes and has no income-eligibility requirements.

Homeowners should check their property-tax bills to see if they are receiving these reductions, said Ralph Meacham, county auditor.
