HOWLAND

The Howland Health & Wellness Committee is beginning its 2016 wellness seminar series at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley- Howland, 4100 N. River Road. The seminar is free and open to the public, and refreshments are provided.

Kara Sabatino of Fitness Together will help participants decipher nutritional guidelines, discuss how to incorporate healthier food and drinks into one’s diet and how to simplify the process for better success.

Free dental service

The North American Dental Group’s Dental Express Boardman Denture Care Center, 6540 South Ave., Boardman, is offering free dental service for under-served children through the annual American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile program.

Opioid addiction program planned

Meridian HealthCare’s January “Now You Know” program, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Poland Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, 311 S. Main St., Poland, focuses on medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction.

The speaker is Dr. Daniel Brown, medical director for Meridian HealthCare, who will discuss how opioid addiction works and the most effective methods of treating it.

Consumers who have not yet signed up for health insurance through the government’s Health Insurance Marketplace have until Jan. 31 to receive coverage effective March 1.

Susan Berny joins Park Vista staff

Susan Berny is Park Vista’s new director of gift planning. As such, she is responsible for endowing the Mahoning Valley Lifelong Learning Institute housed at Park Vista, as well as formally growing the hospice major gift fundraising program for Mahoning Valley Senior Independence.

Berny, who has a background in community fund development and nursing, was most recently a Northeast Ohio Susan G. Komen board member and involved with Easter Seals, the YWCA of Youngstown and the Akron Children’s Hospital Steering Committee.

Dr. Guarendi will speak in Boardman

BOARDMAN

Dr. Ray Guarendi, humorist, clinical psychologist, author, public speaker and nationally syndicated radio host, is coming to the Boardman Schools at 6 p.m. March 1 at the Glenwood Middle School auditorium to speak on the topic “You are a better parent than you think.”

His experience includes working with school districts, Head Start programs, mental health centers, substance-abuse programs, in-patient psychiatric centers, juvenile courts, and in private practice.
