Mahoning County accepting applications for homestead exemptions

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County Auditor’s Office is accepting applications for real estate tax reductions and homestead exemptions, for which this year’s application deadline is June 6.

The owner-occupancy tax reduction is available to those who own and occupy their homes as their principal place of residence.

The homestead exemption for senior citizens, age 65 and over, and disabled people, who own and occupy their homes and meet income eligibility requirements, shields $25,000 of the fair market value of their homes from property taxes.

The homestead exemption for veterans with 100 percent service-connected disabilities, shields up to $50,000 of the fair market value of their homes and has no income eligibility requirements.

Homeowners should check their property tax bills to see if they are receiving these reductions, said Ralph Meacham, county auditor.
