Open house planned at Montessori School

YOUNGSTOWN

Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley, 2008 Lynn Ave., will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday for the parents of children age 2 to 4 to learn more about Montessori education.

The school is in its 39th year. It serves children age 3 to 14 and currently is enrolling 3- and 4-year-olds for the 2016-17 school year.

Five-minutes event moved to Jan. 26

YOUNGSTOWN

Mayor John A. McNally’s monthly “Five Minutes with the Mayor” is being moved to Jan. 26, starting at 5 p.m., in his first-floor office at city hall, 26 S. Phelps St. The event usually is on the third Tuesday of the month, but McNally will not be available that day.

Citizens are invited to discuss issues and ask questions of the mayor for up to five minutes during the monthly sessions.

Pumpkin-growing seminar scheduled

CANFIELD

Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will host a free giant-pumpkin-growing seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 in McMahon Hall at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

Tim Parks will teach the class, which will cover seed selection, soils, fertilizing, pests, pollination, pruning and irrigation. Giant-pumpkin seeds will be sold. To register, call Parks Garden Center at 330-533-7278.

The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers is one of the world’s premier giant-pumpkin clubs with 250 members in North America. Memorial fundraiser

GIRARD

The annual fundraiser in memory of Lena Cross of Girard and her sons, Mason and Christian, who were killed in 2005, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Girard Fraternal Order of Eagles, 26 W. Wilson Ave.

It is an afternoon of food, games and school supplies being given away after 3 p.m.

A spaghetti dinner will be served for a donation of $6 per person; children 5 and under free. A basket raffle and 50/50 drawing are scheduled. Proceeds go to community activities organized by Ken MacPherson and Cindy Michael.
