Austintown sixth-graders to write, research about charities

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown sixth-grade students will be challenged to write an essay about their favorite charity for a contest sponsored by the Austintown Kiwanis Club.

Five student essays will be selected by the committee of Kiwanis and Fitch Key Club members.

The selection will be based on the scoring rubric that includes grammar, reason for choosing, evidence of research and personal connection to the charity.

On Feb. 29, students who wrote essays will be given a check for $50 each from Kiwanis to present to their favorite local charity during an awards ceremony.

The goal for this contest is to give students a unique opportunity to write.

As part of sixth-grade learning standards, students must conduct short research projects to answer a question. This contest encourages students to learn more about the local charitable organizations that help others in the community.

Austintown Kiwanis are community members who volunteer their time and donate money to support children’s activities.
