Broncos sign DE Wolfe to four-year extension

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.

Beaver Local High School graduate Derek Wolfe’s season began with a four-game suspension and will end with a four-year contract extension worth $36.7 million.

The Denver Broncos and the defensive end agreed to the deal Friday.

After three up-and-down years, Wolfe became the inside force that the Broncos projected when they selected him in the second round in the 2012 draft.

“Derek Wolfe’s developed into one of the top DLs in the NFL,” GM John Elway tweeted.

In a testament to his run defense and pressure, Wolfe earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Green Bay in November even though he didn’t have a sack.

He recorded at least a half-sack in six of Denver’s final eight games.

Wolfe set career highs with 49 tackles, 35 solo and 51/2 sacks in 12 games.

Denver’s league-best defense has several other players whose contracts are up soon: linemen Malik Jackson and Antonio Smith, leading tackler Danny Trevathan, safety David Bruton Jr., and outside linebacker Von Miller, although he figures to face the franchise tag.

Akron got within six on a 3-pointer by Josh Williams with 10:42 to play but Boothe quickly answered with a 3-point play to start an 8-0 run.

Arrieta, Cubs have biggest arbitration gap

NEW YORK

NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta had the largest gap among 35 players who swapped proposed figures with their teams in salary arbitration, and new Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman also had a big difference.

After going 22-6 and helping the Cubs reach the NL Championship Series, Arrieta asked Friday for a raise from $3.6 million to $13 million. Chicago offered $7.5 million, leaving the sides $5.5 million apart.

Chapman, under investigation for domestic violence by Major League Baseball, requested a rise from $8,075,000 to $13.1 million. The Yankees, who acquired him from Cincinnati on Dec. 28, offered $9 million to the reliever, whose fastball tops 103 mph.
