Toddler nearly severs finger after falling on Pa. mall escalator

LANGHORNE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a toddler fell at the bottom of a suburban Philadelphia mall’s escalator and got her finger stuck in the mechanism, nearly severing her middle finger.

The accident happened Thursday just after 6 p.m. at the Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne.

Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad Chief Hugh Cooperman tells the Bucks County Courier Times his squad took the 1-year-old girl to the hospital in Middletown and she was then flown by medical helicopter to Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Cooperman says she fell near the bottom of the escalator and got her hand caught in the grate where the machine meets the floor.

Middletown Police Lt. Ken Mellus says the girl’s finger was successfully re-attached, and she is recovering at home today. It wasn’t clear which hand was injured.
