Austintown Intermediate School had a special visitor on Dec. 18. Santa Claus and his elves came to surprise the students in third, fourth and fifth grade.

Each year, the PTA puts on this special event with the help of parent and grandparent volunteers. Santa and his elves visited the fifth- and fourth-grade classes first, and saved the third-grade class for last.

The elves passed out a candy cane and a bag of reindeer food to every student. The reindeer food was made of granola and glitter for the students to sprinkle on their yard for Santa’s reindeer to eat.

Santa visited all of the classes, talked to the students and took giant class pictures with each them. Walgreens also helped the Austintown PTA with the pictures by giving them a special deal when it came to printing out all the pictures of the students with Santa.

Many of the students were surprised when they saw Santa and rushed at the opportunity to tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

“The third-graders are the ones who get most excited when they see Santa,” said Amy Sherwood, the PTA member in charge of this event.

Some of the students had a hard time believing that the Santa coming to visit was a real Santa, but many of the students enjoyed seeing him and got excited to talk to him and hug him.

Austintown Intermediate School also got into the Christmas spirit by having a Santa gift workshop and a door decorating contest. The students and teachers worked hard to make decorations for their doors before Santa came to the classes. His visit gave them a little break from crafting.
