SONY OPEN
HONOLULU
Vijay Singh opened with a 7-under 63 for a five-way share of the lead and a score just good enough to beat players in his own age group Thursday at the Sony Open. Singh, who turns 53 next month and could be the oldest PGA Tour winner in history, narrowly missed an 8-foot eagle putt on his final hole Thursday and still posted his best score in 19 years playing Waialae Country Club. He was tied with Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner, Ricky Barnes and Morgan Hoffmann. Singh was among three players 50 or older who shot 66 or better. Fred Funk, who turns 60 this summer, made a late bid for the lead until a bogey on the 16th hole. He wound up with a 65. Davis Love III, who won the Wyndham Championship last August at age 51, birdied his last hole for a 66.
JOBURG OPEN
JOHANNESBURG
South Africa’s Justin Walters birdied the final hole for a 7-under 65 and the first-round lead in the European Tour’s Joburg Open. Walters opened on Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s East Course, the site of the final two rounds. England’s Anthony Wall and David Howell and Zimbabwe’s Mark Williams shot 6-under 65 on the West Course. South Africa’s Haydn Porteous and Sweden’s Johan Carlsson and Michael Jonzon shot 66 on the East Course to also reach 6 under.
DIAMOND RESORTS INVITATIONAL
WINDERMERE, FLA.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen scored 25 points in the Diamond Resorts Invitational to take a two-point lead in the modified Stableford event for celebrity athletes and entertainers. Players receive six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, zero for bogey and minus-2 for double bogey and higher. Saberhagen had an eagle-birdie-birdie-birdie run on Nos. 2-5 on his second nine at the Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Point in the inaugural 54-hole event. Former tennis champion Mardy Fish was second. Former hockey star Mike Modano and major leaguer Phil Nevin were three points behind Saberhagen. Fish had 25 points through 13 holes thanks to seven birdies, but made two double bogeys and a bogey on his last five holes.
LATIN AMERICAN AMATEUR
LA ROMANA, D.R.
Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz and Ecuador’s Jose Andres Miranda shared the first-round lead at 4-under 68 in the Latin American Amateur Championship. The winner Sunday will receive a spot in the Masters and the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur.
