13th annual Father-Daughter Dance

Boardman Park will be hosting its 13th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or father figures who have a daughter(s) ages 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner and dancing with their little princesses. The dance will be offered on four nights: Feb. 11 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 12 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 13 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 14 from 5-8 p.m. This semi-formal dinner dance will include dinner, dancing to DJ music, a professional photo for a keepsake and a lot of dancing. Tickets will go on sale beginning Jan. 11. You may purchase your tickets at the park office, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or by calling the office at 330-726-8105. You may also purchase your tickets online at boardmanpark.com. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets for Boardman residents are $40 per couple, non-residents are $50 per couple, $20 for additional Boardman child and $25 additional non-Boardman resident child. Kiwanis donates carbon monoxide detectors

The Boardman Kiwanis Club recently donated 25 carbon monoxide detectors to the Boardman Fire Department. Chartered in 1947, the Kiwanis Club is Boardman’s oldest service club. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.

Saxon Club to host pork-kraut dinner

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Jan. 17 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $9.50 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Victorian Players show rescheduled

The Victorian Players have announced the postponement of its scheduled January show, “Same Time Next Year.” The production has been rescheduled for June 17-26. The Victorian Players apologize to season ticket holders for any inconvenience this may cause. In the January slot, the Vic has contracted for a one-woman show performed by Carol Weakland, actress, author and storyteller. “A Date with the Bront ´ Sisters,” two one-woman shows based on “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights,” will be performed Jan. 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 24 and 31 at 2 p.m. at the Victorian Players Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Jan. 18

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Tequila Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, located at 583 E. Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ The fee is $10 per class. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Torch Club to meet on Jan. 18

Should parents be required to have their children vaccinated? Debating this topic will be Torch Club members John K. Fockler, Jr. and Janet Moy-Lamonica at the Youngstown Chapter of International Torch Clubs dinner-discussion meeting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 18. The meeting will be in Kilcawley Center, Bresnahan Rooms I and II, on the campus of Youngstown State University. The public is invited to attend. Black History Month puzzle challenge

Find the answers to trivia questions during the month of February at the Boardman library throughout regular library hours that relate to Black History Month. For each question you get right, you’ll get a puzzle piece to add to our puzzle. See if you can finish the puzzle by the end of the month. This event is for children of all ages.

Fitness Fun story time

Join the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. for stories and activities selected from the “Eat, Play, Grow” program. This event will focus on good fun and good nutrition. Prizes and snacks will be given. This event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Kids Coalition and is for toddlers and preschoolers.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Game Stations

No plans for your day off of school on Feb. 15? Children of all ages can visit the Boardman library’s Game Stations throughout regular library hours. There will be numerous tables of games set up that you can travel around to and play. Bring your family and friends and enjoy a day of games.

Free healthy eating workshops

A series of three weekly “Healthy Eating for You” presentations are offered from 12:30-2 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 13 in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman. Weekly topics will be “Label Reading” on Jan. 20 and “Eating Mindfulness” on Jan. 27. Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead the informational discussion and answer questions in the presentation, which is free and open to the public and provided by Mercy Health Youngstown. MCCTC launches new website

Then Mahoning County Career and Technical Center has announced the launch of their newly, redesigned and updated website, www.mahoningctc.com. This new website is going to better provide parents, students, staff and community members more relevant and easy to find information about what MCCTC has to offer. The website features a new high school page, as well as a new adult education page with enhanced features, including easier navigation, updated information and more search options. Mike Tarintino at ImageMarketing, a graduate of MCCTC, designed the website.

Houston named to fall 2015 Dean’s High Honors List

Mitchell Houston was named to the fall 2015 Dean’s High Honor List. Houston is majoring in Petroleum Engineering at Marietta College and is scheduled to graduate in May of 2019. Houston is a graduate of Columbiana High School. Any full-time Marietta College student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average of 3.75 or better in a given semester is recognized as a Dean’s High Honors List student for that semester.

Color your world

Join the Boardman library from 7-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 for a relaxing evening of adult coloring. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Light refreshments will be available.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Meeting

Boardman High School students earn technology department grant

Boardman High School’s business and technology department was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $4,000 by DonorsChoose.org. The grant was earned by the students in the technology classes with each student completing a unit on a computer programming language in Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization working to promote careers in computer programming. The grant’s maximum amount awarded to any participating class was $4,000. The funding was provided by Google. After the award was received students decided to purchase 20 Asus 11 inch Ultra Books with Microsoft 365 software for use in all the department classes. In addition, the students decided to purchase two 3D Printing Layer pens that will be used in the department’s 3D Printing and Programming classes. ‚ãMrs. Evelyn Stanton, department leader, commends the students for their dedication and commitment to the future of Boardman High School’s technology courses and their hard work in obtaining the funds.

Excel for business

Play with clay

Come to the Boardman library at 6 p.m. on Jan. 28 to make a demo clay ornament, pin or figurine to give as a gift. All supplies provided, limited space. Adults and teens may register by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for the Boardman Library.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas, or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library at 11 a.m. on Jan. 25. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects).

Super Bowl 50 predictions

Teens can stop by the Boardman library during regular library hours between Jan. 25 and Feb. 6 to fill out a Super Bowl Prediction form. Answer such questions as these: Will the coin toss land heads or tails? What will the first commercial be advertising? Which team will call the first timeout? The library will tally the scores after the event, and the teen with the highest score will win a $10 Dicks Sporting Goods gift card.

Night Owl story time

An evening story time for children ages 3-5 will take place at the Boardman library at 6 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 26. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30 minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Mini-Makerspace: Snap Circuits

Make learning a snap with Snap Circuits at the Boardman library Jan. 25-30. All week long during library hours, borrow one of the library’s four Snap Circuit kits. Follow the diagrams to build projects like radios, voice recorders, doorbells and more. When you’re done, unsnap the pieces and turn them back in. All Snap Circuits products are for children ages 8 and up.

The Bistro at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center open to the public

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at Mahoning County Career Technical Center, is open for lunch hours to the public. The Bistro will be open Tuesdays-Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for dine-in or carry out through the winter. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff, line cooks and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. The Bistro schedule is as follows: Jan. 20, 21. The restaurant will also be open in February and March with dates being announced soon.
