San Diego mayor seeks fresh start for Chargers

SAN DIEGO

Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the NFL’s rejection of the Chargers’ plans to build a stadium in Carson gives both sides the opportunity for a fresh start in what has been a bruising saga.

The Chargers walked away from talks with city and county leaders in June. While the NFL owners rejected their plans to build a stadium with the rival Raiders, they gave the Chargers the option to join the St. Louis Rams in Inglewood.

Faulconer says he left a message Wednesday for Chargers chairman Dean Spanos, who was traveling back from Houston.

Chargers attorney Mark Fabiani says Spanos will take a few days to “to evaluate the franchise’s new options.”

The city and county are offering $350 million to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium.

Olympian Street charged with assault

SALT LAKE CITY

Olympic gold-medalist skier Picabo Street has been charged with assault and domestic violence after authorities say she pushed her father down the stairs in a Utah home in December.

Street, 44, told police she locked her 76-year-old father in the basement of a Park City house after pushing him and then called authorities, according to charging documents released Wednesday. She says her father, Roland Street, pulled her hair in the Dec. 23 fight at a house near Park City that police say Street’s three children witnessed.

Roland Street told police his daughter got angry and started yelling after he bumped his car into the house while trying to leave, documents show. When the two went inside the house, a physical altercation broke out.

He says his daughter grabbed him in the shoulder and neck area and pushed him down two flights of stairs. He said he may have hit his head. Police observed cuts on Roland Street’s elbow and neck.

FIFA official extradited to U.S. to face charges

BERN, Switzerland

Former FIFA vice president Alfredo Hawit has been extradited to the United States to face bribery charges.

The Swiss justice ministry says Hawit was handed over on Wednesday to two American police officers in Zurich who accompanied him on the New York flight.

Hawit, from Honduras, was interim president of the CONCACAF regional governing body when he was arrested in Zurich on Dec. 3.

U.S. prosecutors accuse him of accepting bribes totaling millions of dollars linked to the sale of marketing rights to football tournaments in Latin America.

The FIFA ethics committee suspended Hawit for 90 days after his arrest. Hawit followed Jack Warner and Jeffrey Webb as CONCACAF presidents indicted in the sprawling U.S. Department of Justice investigation of bribery and corruption in international soccer.
