Revenant leads Oscar nominees

The 88th annual Oscar nominations were announced Thursday in Beverly Hills, Calif., by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The brutal frontier saga “The Revenant” leads with 12 nominations, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers.

The strong showing for “The Revenant,” including a best actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio, follows its win at the Golden Globes. It sets director Alejandro Inarritu for a possible back-to-back win following his best-picture winning “Birdman.”

George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed with 10 nominations, including best picture. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed 7 nominations, including best picture, but no best director nod for Scott.

Best Picture: “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,” “Room” and “Spotlight.”

Best Actor: Bryan Cranston, “Trumbo,” Matt Damon, “The Martian”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant”; Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs”; and Eddie Redmayne, “The Danish Girl.”

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, “Carol”; Brie Larson, “Room”; Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”; Charlotte Rampling, “45 Years”; Saoirse Ronan, “Brooklyn”.

Supporting Actress: Jennifer Jason Leigh, “The Hateful Eight”; Rooney Mara, “Carol”; Rachel McAdams, “Spotlight”; Alicia Vikander, “The Danish Girl”; and Kate Winslet, “Steve Jobs.”

Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, “The Big Short”; Tom Hardy, “The Revenant”; Mark Ruffalo, “Spotlight”; Mark Rylance, “Bridge of Spies”; Sylvester Stallone, “Creed”.

Animated Film: “Anomalisa,” “Boy and the World,” “Inside Out,” Shaun the Sheep Movie” and “When Marnie Was There.”
