Car’s passenger is arrested, in custody

YOUNGSTOWN

A woman who was a passenger in a car in which a Chicago Avenue man was killed in an accident Tuesday morning was arrested on a weapons charge and a warrant.

Reports said Teonia Gowdy, 26, of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, was taken into custody on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon about 12:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after hospital found a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun on her. She also was wanted on a warrant from municipal court. She is in the Mahoning County jail.

Meanwhile, the Mahoning County Coroner’s office identified the passenger who was killed as Jerome Atkins, 40. The coroner’s office ruled he died of multiple blunt force injuries. The gun that was seized is the 10th the police have found this year.

US DEA arrests 4th man after search

AUSTINTOWN

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency arrested a fourth suspect, Ricardo Bustillos-Ramos, 44, in the aftermath of federal investigators’ search Tuesday of an Austintown home they believe was a stop along the route to transport cocaine from Texas to Ohio.

On Tuesday, DEA agents arrested Bruce Cuevas Sr., 61, Lilia Comacho-Jimenez, 31, and Jose Martinez, 41, after agents searched a home at 574 Notre Dame Drive in the College Park development in Austintown. According to Mahoning County jail records, Bustillos-Ramos also was arrested in the case, said 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

During an investigation that began in March 2015, through tapping cellphone conversations and surveillance, agents determined that cocaine was shipped from Texas and delivered in a duffel bag to Martinez’s Notre Dame Drive home by Bustillos-Ramos, also of Austintown. They are charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine.

Students to compete in moot court event

YOUNGSTOWN

Two teams of students from Youngstown State University are competing Friday and Saturday in the American Collegiate Moot Court Association national championship.

The teams are Andrik Massaro of Canfield and Jacob Schriner-Briggs of Liberty, and Jilian Smith of Canfield and Michael Marshall of Boardman. This is the third trip to nationals for Massaro and Schriner-Briggs.

The students will compete in the national tournament at California State University at Long Beach. The YSU teams qualified in November at the Great Lakes Regional competition at Saginaw Valley State University.

This year, 360 teams competed in 10 regional tournaments.

Only 80 teams were selected to go on to the nationals. The only other Ohio schools represented at the national contest are the College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan.

Enrollment meeting

YOUNGSTOWN

Stambaugh Charter Academy, 2420 Donald Ave., will host an enrollment-information meeting and open house from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. Friday.
