YSU wins Healthy Ohio Worksite Award for 5th straight year

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University has won the Healthy Ohio-Healthy Worksite Gold Level Award for 2015 for its commitment to employee health.

YSU joins Ohio State University as the only universities in the state to receive the Gold Level Award.

YSU won the award in the Large Business category for organizations with more than 1,000 employees. Other winners in that category included OSU, Mount Carmel Health System, Mercy Medical Center, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, America Showa Inc., Union Hospital Dover, Southern Ohio Medical Center, Lake Health, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Tri-Health, and The Westfield Group.

It is the fifth-consecutive year that YSU has won the award, but the first time the university has received the Gold Level Award. Previously, YSU won two Silver Awards and two Bronze Awards.

Driver rescued from flipped car in Vienna

VIENNA

A driver was pulled from his car after it veered off state Route 193 in Vienna Township, flipped over in the yard of a home along the highway and rolled over several times early Saturday night.

The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Witnesses pulled the driver out of the vehicle through the vehicle’s driver-side front door, reported 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Neither the identity nor the condition of the driver is known.

Ohio Township group offers scholarships

COLUMBUS

The deadline is approaching for college scholarships available to residents of Ohio townships.

The Ohio Township Association will reward three scholarships of $1,500 each to current high-school seniors planning to attend two- or four-year colleges or universities beginning in the fall. The scholarship categories are local government achievement and academic achievement.

Master Gardener applications available

CANFIELD

People with a strong interest in gardening and helping others are invited to apply to become an Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteer.

OSU Extension-Mahoning County is accepting applications for Master Gardener training this spring.

The classes will begin March 9 and finish May 11. They will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday.

The total tuition for the class is $125. Tuition includes a notebook of all materials, snacks, speakers, and items for hands-on activities.

Falls man has heart attack while driving; patrol is investigating

CHAMPION

A Newton Falls man, Arthur Pierson Jr., 58, died Sunday after suffering an apparent heart attack while driving east on the state Route 5 Bypass and crashing through the right-of-way fence just east of state Route 45.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

Pierson was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital where he later died.

It isn’t known if he died of the heart attack or of injuries suffered in the crash.
