Viewership up for NFL playoff games

NEW YORK

Viewership is up for both Saturday NFL wild-card playoff games.

The Steelers’ win over the Bengals in prime time averaged 31.2 million viewers on CBS, up 12 percent from the 27.9 million for the Baltimore-Pittsburgh matchup in the same slot a year ago.

The early game Saturday was simulcast on ESPN and ABC after it was only on ESPN nationally last season. The Chiefs’ rout of the Texans averaged 25.2 million viewers between the two networks, up 13 percent from the 22.2 million for Arizona-Carolina in 2015.

Spieth opens 2016 with win at Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii

Jordan Spieth brought his old form to the new year and had no trouble winning the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

Staked to a five-shot lead, Spieth made two straight birdies around the turn at Kapalua to restore his margin, and he spent the rest of the afternoon soaking up the views of surf and sun on Maui.

He closed with a 6-under 67 for an eight-shot victory over Patrick Reed. He finished at 30-under 262, joining Ernie Els as the only players in PGA Tour history to finish a 72-hole event at 30 under or lower. Els won at Kapalua in 2003 with a record 31 under.

The view from the top is stunning at the moment, not so much for those trying to catch him.

Nets fire Hollins, reassign GM King

NEW YORK

The Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Lionel Hollins and reassigned general manager Billy King in the midst of their worst season since moving from New Jersey.

The Nets said Sunday that assistant Tony Brown will serve as the interim head coach, and the GM position will remain open until a replacement is hired.

The Nets have lost four in a row overall and nine straight at home, where attendance has dwindled at the $1 billion Barclays Center. The Nets had made the playoffs every year since relocating for the 2012-13 season, but they are 10-27, better only than the league-worst Philadelphia 76ers.

King had been GM since 2010, orchestrating a number of high-profile moves that led to just one playoff series victory. Hollins was in his second season as coach.

Bills’ Ryan hires brother as coach

BUFFALO, N.Y.

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan has hired his twin brother Rob to become a member of his staff.

Rob Ryan will serve as assistant head coach with a specific responsibility for defense. It marks the second time the two have worked together after previously serving as assistants on their father Buddy Ryan’s staff in Arizona in 1994 and ‘95.

What’s unclear is where Bills current defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman fits in the team’s hierarchy.

Rob Ryan was available after being fired as the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator in mid-November. He was dismissed with the Saints defense ranking last in the NFL in yards and points allowed.

UNLV coach resigns

LAS VEGAS

UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice has resigned in the middle of his fifth season after the struggling Runnin’ Rebels opened Mountain West Conference play with three straight losses.

Associate head coach Todd Simon will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season.

Rice was under pressure to win this season after UNLV failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season in 2014-15.
