Sojourn to the Past will receive The King Center’s annual Coretta Scott King award

Sojourn to the Past will receive The King Center’s annual Coretta Scott King ‘A.N.G.E.L. Award’ (Advancing Nonviolence through Generations of Exceptional Leadership), a youth initiative award Saturday in Atlanta, Ga.
“This award recognizes young leaders and a youth initiative that exemplifies exceptional leadership in the areas of peace, social justice and nonviolent change,” Bernice King, daughter of Coretta Scott King, said in a news release.
The King Center is highlighting the Youngstown Sojourn to the Past students for their work in creating Nonviolence Week in the Mahoning Valley, including the annual Nonviolence Parade and Rally, as well as their securing the passage of the “Nonviolence Week in Ohio” law in 2013.
Penny Wells, director of Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, along with Sojourn participants, Micah Smith and Sarina Chatman, will attendi the “Salute to Greatness Awards” dinner in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Atlanta, Ga. Smith is a 2014 graduate of Youngstown Early College and Chatman graduated from Chaney High School in 2013. Both are Youngstown State University students.
