Villani to read poems about river

WARREN

DNA Studios Art Gallery, 137 South Park Ave., will host a poetry reading by Jim Villani, editor and publisher at Pig Iron Press in Youngstown, at 7 p.m. Saturday Jan. 9.

Villani will present poems about the Mahoning River, its influence on the development of the Valley, and about the essential element of water in bodies, be they streams, rivers or seas. In addition to his own works, Villani will perform poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sylvia Plath, W.S. Merwin and the Mahoning Valley’s Kenneth Patchen.

Included in the presentation will be performances of Patchen’s classic steel- industry poems “The Orange Bears” and “May I Ask You A Question, Mr. Youngstown Sheet & Tube?” The poems will be grounded by Villani’s personal observations and research about the Mahoning River. He will demonstrate in performance how the Mahoning River and its integrated tributary and river connections form a vine upon which communities grow and prosper.

A free-will offering will be accepted. For information, contact Amber Slick at 330-980-8794.
