Solo entrant in Michigan city contest wins $2,000 package
BAY CITY, Mich.
A man has won prizes worth nearly $2,000 after being the only person to enter a contest to celebrate a Michigan city’s 150th anniversary.
MLive reports that Taylor Langstaff had to do 25 activities in the Bay City area and stamp them off on a “passport” to win the prizes.
The activities included seeing a show at The State Theatre, enjoying a beer at Tri-City Brewing Co. and going on a holiday tour of homes in Bay City’s Historic District.
Langstaff’s prizes included restaurant gift certificates, a yearlong membership to the Bay Area Family Y, Bay City-branded T-shirts and a four-person pass to sail aboard the Appledore IV tall ship.
Because Langstaff was the only entrant, he also received second through 10th place winner prizes.
Bay City is 115 miles northwest of Detroit.
Barking dog leads police officer to trapped canine companion
ORANGE, Mass.
It was a scene straight out of an episode of “Lassie.”
Police in western Massachusetts say a dog approached an officer Tuesday barking frantically and then led the officer across a field and down an icy, 30-foot embankment, where the dog’s canine companion had become entangled in the undergrowth.
Firefighters in Orange used a ladder to free the trapped dog, which was taken to a veterinarian for a checkup.
The two dogs had run off hours earlier when their owner suffered a medical emergency at her home and was taken to the hospital. Police tried to catch the dogs, but they kept running away.
Orange police said on their Facebook page: “Apparently, any dog in the right circumstances can turn into Lassie.”
Police, witnesses: Man climbs highway sign, stopping traffic
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Police and witnesses say a man climbed atop a road sign along a major highway and stayed there for two hours, moving from side to side and dangling his feet as drivers below faced a long delay.
Metro Nashville Police closed part of Interstate 65 about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police later charged 46-year-old William Walters with disorderly conduct and obstructing a roadway.
Police say in a statement that negotiator Cedric Connolly eventually persuaded Waters to come down from the sign.
Local media outlets reported that the road closure, which lasted through much of rush hour, caused major traffic delays in the downtown area.
Police say that along with charges, Walters will undergo a mental-health evaluation.
