Coins, letters found in time capsule at Krakusy Hall

YOUNGSTOWN —Members of the Free Polish Krakusy Society have sat vigil since Monday, eager to see if the rumors were true about a time capsule in their former hall on South Avenue.

After a wrecking ball revealed the building’s cornerstone, the capsule — a small metal can — was discovered by workers with ProQuality Land Development of Campbell, which demolished the former hall, built in 1939.

Inside the can were coins — a quarter, dime, nickel and penny — from 1939 and letters from the society’s leadership from that same year in English and Polish addressed to “our future generations.”

The letter gave a brief history of the society, and stated their wish that the new building would be “a proper place to meet and discuss and exchange ideas for the betterment of our citizenry of Polish extraction.”

The members said today they were excited that the time capsule was found and they looked forward to framing the coins and letters to place in a potential future location for the organization.
