POLAND

Village council has welcomed a new member.

Leah Wilson was sworn in for her first term at a meeting Tuesday. Christine Yash, who has served on council for more than 20 years, was sworn in for a new term.

Other council members are Joseph Mazur, William Dunnavant, Atty. Robert Limmer and Linda Srnec; the mayor is Timothy Sicafuse.

In other business, council looked back at a significant moment in the village’s history: its incorporation in 1866. The village marks its 150th year this year, and Poland Historical Society members briefed council on planned celebrations.

The community is invited to commemorate the milestone at the 10th annual Celebrate Poland event this year.

During Celebrate Poland, the historical society will unveil the community’s newest state historical marker in front of town hall, which is dedicated to the hall and the village’s incorporation.

The historical society also will publish a supplemental version of “Poland Historical Highlights,” which covers Poland’s history from 1796 to 1966, in honor of the sesquicentennial. The supplemental edition, which will be for sale at Celebrate Poland, will cover events since 1966.

The historical society invites community organizations, churches and businesses to submit histories of their groups or update existing histories for the book. For more information about submissions, call 330-536-6877. Volunteers who wish to help on the project should send an email to phs@polandtownship.com.

A pancake breakfast to raise money for Celebrate Poland will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 23 at the high school.
