Ohio man, 77, sentenced to 10 years for string of break-ins

TIFFIN, Ohio (AP) — A 77-year-old man with a lengthy criminal record was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison Tuesday for 11 break-ins across western Ohio last year.

Robert Tackett, of Lima, and Roger Hemry, 52, admitted to breaking into bars, veterans’ clubs and fraternal lodges in eight counties between May and Aug. 16, when the two were caught carrying a safe and liquor out of the Moose Lodge in New Riegel. They pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools and related offenses.

Hemry was sentenced in October to more than four years in prison, and Tackett had asked for the same sentence. He told Judge David Faulkner in Seneca County Common Pleas Court that his former brother-in-law lured him back into crime.

“I kept saying, ‘I’m done with this. I can’t hardly see, can’t hear, and if I run 50 feet I’d have to stop, pant for five minutes,”’ Tackett said. “He kept coming over and coming over and finally he talked me into it, I guess. Look what it got me.”
