Liberty Tax Service plans event, collection

YOUNGSTOWN

Liberty Tax Service will host grand-opening events for its Youngstown tax offices from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 2622 Mahoning Ave., and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at 2633 Market St.

The celebrations will include an acoustic performance by Drew and Roxanne Johnson of Sweet Sacrifice. There will be games, raffles and prizes, and Liberty Tax representatives will be available to answer tax questions.

There will be a coat/camping supply collection drive for local nonprofit group Tent City, and it is seeking winter items in good condition, including three- person pop-up tents, coats, hats and gloves, hand warmers, camping supplies, tent heaters and camping cooktops.

They are seeking $5 gift cards for restaurants such as McDonald’s where recipients may go to warm up and get a cup of hot soup or coffee.

Road-rage incident

AUSTINTOWN

A road-rage incident led to a case of aggravated menacing by a suspect in a black truck. A victim reported being tailgated and harassed while driving township roads Sunday afternoon.

A suspect approached the victim at the Sheetz service station on Boardman-Canfield Road and pointed a black revolver at him and threatened to kill him. The report was given to the detective division for further investigation.

Man shot in gunbattle during home invasion

WARREN

A 28-year-old Plymouth Place Northeast man was shot in the chest in an apparent gunbattle with one of four masked men who broke into his house at 1:40 a.m. Saturday.

He was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. His condition was not available.

The man’s girlfriend said she heard a noise and handed her handgun to him. He opened the locked bedroom door and saw four masked men standing there.

The victim and one of the other men fired their guns simultaneously at each other, with the victim falling down and the four others fleeing, the woman said.

The victim said he fired one shot but thinks he missed.

The woman said the home’s doors normally are locked, and a 2-by-4 is placed in front of both the front and back door. Police said only one 2-by-4 was found – in front of the back door. Police found no point of entry.

School board to meet

The Brookfield school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the school auditorium, 614 Bedford Road SE.

Hubbard tree disposal

HUBBARD

Hubbard city officials are asking residents to dispose of Christmas trees along with the regular trash since state grant money for a Christmas-tree recycling program has dried up. Trees should be cut up into pieces no longer than 4 feet each, Service Director Dan Livingston said.
