The Mahoning County District Board of Health is sponsoring the evidence-based “Healthy U, Chronic Disease Self-Management Program,” which features six-week workshops in Poland and Boardman.

The program, developed by Stanford University School of Medicine, helps individuals better manage chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, heart disease or hypertension. Workshop subjects include dealing with frustration, fatigue and pain; exercise suggestions for strength and flexibility; proper use of medications; effective communication; proper nutrition; decision-making; and how to evaluate new treatments.

Participants receive a copy of the book “Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions” and an audio relaxation CD. Registration is required. Call 330-270-2855, ext. 109 or 103.

January and February workshops at the Poland Library are from 9:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 13, 20 and 27; and Feb. 3, 10 and 17; February and March workshops at the Boardman Library are from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 23 and March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.

One-hour workshop at St. Joseph Warren

WARREN

Mercy Health Youngstown offers a free one-hour workshop, “Health at Home,” from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 21 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. S.E.

The workshop and materials are free, but reservations are required. Call 330-480-3070. The workshop includes a reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention.

Three-week series on healthy eating

BOARDMAN

A series of three weekly “Healthy Eating for You” presentations are offered from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 13 in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St.

Weekly topics are: “Portion Control,” Jan. 13; “Label Reading,” Jan. 20, and “Eating Mindfulness,” Jan. 27.

Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead the informational discussion and answer questions in the presentation, which is free and open to the public and provided by Mercy Health Youngstown. Reservations are appreciated. Call 330-480-3070. Parking is free.
