OSHP still probing accident in which deputy was cited

CANFIELD — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating a weekend accident involving a Mahoning County Sheriff's deputy.

Deputy Marcella Walter was cited by OSHP for failure to control when she slid off the road and crashed into two mailboxes and a house at 3793 Western Reserve Road.

Walters was responding to another accident on New Year's Eve evening.

Billy Cappabianca, Mahonjng County Sheriff's Major, said Walter hit a patch of black ice on the bridge over Western Reserve Road near Detwiler Road.

"Things like this are part of the line of work we do," Cappabianca said. "When you drive everyday, any conditions, 80 miles a day accidents are bound to happen."

Walter was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for nonlife-threatening injuries and was released the same day.

Cappabianca said Walter was not disciplined and will return to duty on her next scheduled day.

The full damage to the house Walter slid into has not yet been determined, but it's reported there is damage to the front porch and the basement.
