Dog dies, people escape Howland fire today


HOWLAND — A family dog died, but a man and his wife and other pets escaped a 2:49 a.m. house fire today at 7720 Micawber Road Northeast. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The couple was awakened by a smoke detector and escaped uninjured. They were assisted by the American Red Cross.

The Howland Fire Department found heavy fire on the second floor and gained control of the fire in 15 minutes, said township fire Chief James Pantalone.

Four other fire departments assisted with the fire – Cortland, Vienna, Youngstown Air Reserve Station and Brookfield. Twenty five firefighters were at the scene, including five fire engines, two ladder trucks, two ambulances and three other vehicles.
