Campbell students recognized for positive behavior

Fifty-six Campbell kindergarten through seventh-grade students spent a morning last month at the Butler Institute of American Art with players and coaches from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

During the event, breakfast was served and the students went on an art scavenger hunt throughout the museum with center fielder Keon Braxton, pitcher Nick Kingham, coach Nick Leyva and the Pirates’ parrot mascot. Prizes were awarded to 15 students, and everyone had the opportunity to make Pirates pennants and get player autographs.

The 56 students who attended the event achieved outstanding (gold) as part of the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system at Campbell K-7 Building.

“I was on gold for picking things up for other kids in the halls, helping other students with their work and getting good grades,” said James Shaffer, a seventh-grader. “It was really cool to hang out with the Pirates and get their autograph.”

Each day students start on green, which is ready to learn, and then can progress to gold status by keeping up their grades and helping others in class, explained assistant Principal Jane Buckingham.

Students who are on green 85 percent of the month are awarded a flame on the wall of flames and are recognized at a monthly “the wall of flames ceremony.”
