CANFIELD

The annual Whispering Pines District Boy Scout Klondike Derby will take place Jan. 15-16 at Camp Stambaugh.

The derby is an annual district winter event to build on Scout skills for boys 11 to 17 in an outdoor environment concentrating on outdoor activities and character-building skills in winter conditions.

On the night of Jan. 15, Scouts will camp out either in tents or cabins and prepare for the events.

Boy Scout Troop 25 of Canfield, Boy Scout Troop 44 of Poland and Boy Scout Troop 60 of Boardman, along with help from volunteer staff members, will host the annual event. This year’s theme will be “Yukon Gold Rush” and will include a variety of skills such as primitive fire building, nature plant identification, knots and lashing, map reading, animal and mammal identification, and first-aid competitions. The events will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16. Some troops will stay a second night, and others will leave after the conclusion of all activities.

The Greater Western Reserve Council museum at the Camp will be open to the public Jan. 16.

Boy Scout troops from throughout Mahoning County and Hubbard will be participating with an estimated 150 or more Scouts and leaders attending.
