TCU QB charged with assaulting police officer

SAN ANTONIO

Police charged star TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin with felony assault of a police officer stemming from a bar fight early Thursday and he was suspended for this weekend’s Alamo Bowl game against No. 15 Oregon.

The decision by coach Gary Patterson effectively ends Boykin’s college career, since he is a senior.

Patterson said Boykin and junior wide receiver Preston Miller were suspended for Saturday’s game due to a violation of team rules that he did not specify.

San Antonio Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said Boykin was being held on $5,000 bond. The Bexar County Magistrate’s website showed Boykin was arrested at 1:45 a.m.

A police report said the 22-year-old Boykin was fighting with employees at a bar, but people he was with told officers they would take him back to his hotel.

Police said Boykin then charged at responding officers and swung at one before he was taken to the ground. The report also said Boykin resisted arrest until he was told they would use a stun gun on him.

Boykin opened the season as a favorite for the Heisman Trophy but injuries and a midseason loss to Oklahoma State took some momentum out of the Horned Frogs.

Spurs’ Duncan returns from knee injury

SAN ANTONIO

Tim Duncan will play Saturday when San Antonio hosts the Houston Rockets after missing the previous three games.

The team made the announcement on Thursday. Duncan sat out San Antonio’s win Monday against Minnesota for rest, but missed the next two home games because of soreness in his right knee.

Houston snapped San Antonio’s seven-game winning streak with an 88-84 victory on Christmas Day.

Duncan missed three games earlier this season for rest. The 39-year-old forward is averaging a career-low 9.0 points, but has deferred much of his offense to emerging star Kawhi Leonard and newly acquired LaMarcus Aldridge.

Xavier’s Sumner hospitalized after fall

VILLANOVA, PA.

Xavier freshman guard Edmond Sumner was “walking and talking” at a hospital after he was taken off the court on a stretcher following a hard fall in Thursday’s game against Villanova.

Sumner drove to the basket when he collided in midair with Villanova defender Kris Jenkins and crashed to the court. Jenkins, 6-foot-6, 240-pounds, appeared to land on Sumner’s head and plow it into the court.

Sumner was motionless on his back for several minutes until he finally raised his knees. Coach Chris Mack, trainers and teammates checked on Sumner, among the more promising freshman in basketball who has averaged 11.7 points for the No. 6 Musketeers.

Mack said Sumner would not return with the team and likely take a commercial flight Thursday night to Cincinnati.
