An Ohio pastor with deep roots in the Dayton community was shot and killed at his church Sunday, and police have taken his brother into custody in the slaying.

Dayton police say 70-year-old William B. Schooler was shot around 12:30 p.m. while in his office at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church. Despite early witness accounts, police say Schooler was not in the pulpit when he was attacked.

His brother, 68-year-old Daniel Gregory Schooler, was in Montgomery County jail Sunday. Police Sgt. Richard Blommel says he’ll face a murder charge today.

Missing girl found

wolf point, mont.

A missing 4-year-old girl was found Sunday on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana, just a few miles from where she was reportedly abducted while playing in a park.

Roosevelt County spokesman Lee Allmer said the girl was undergoing a medical exam to make sure she was not harmed.

The girl was found by Undersheriff Corey Reum a few miles north of Wolf Point, the town where witnesses say she was taken by a young man about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

John Lieba was apprehended in Wolf Point while driving around after several witnesses at the park identified him, Allmer said.

Airstrikes reported in northern Syria

BEIRUT

Warplanes carried out air raids Sunday on several parts of northern Syria as a top opposition official warned that continued violations of a fragile cease-fire could jeopardize a planned resumption of U.N.-brokered peace talks.

The acts of violence came as Russia said a northern town held by a predominantly Kurdish militia came under fire from the Turkish side of the border.

Sunday’s air raids came on the second day of a cease-fire brokered by Russia and the U.S., the most-ambitious effort yet to curb the violence of the country’s five-year civil war.

Director, Flint mayor hope benefit raises awareness, funds

FLINT, MICH.

A benefit for residents affected by the lead-contaminated water crisis in Flint features some big names but is a grass-roots effort at its core, “Creed” director Ryan Coogler said Sunday.

Coogler, actor Jesse Williams and about a dozen other people opened the #JusticeForFlint event on Oscar night by talking about the water crisis and thanking the crowd. Those participating in the Flint benefit or attending it are helping raise money and awareness about the water problem, Coogler said.

None of the opening speakers mentioned the Academy Awards, where Coogler’s “Creed” was a favorite to win the best supporting actor Oscar for Sylvester Stallone’s reprise of his iconic Rocky character.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver said she was grateful for those who put on the free show.

The fundraiser, hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress, was also streamed live.
