Penguins split two games at UNC-Greensboro tourney

GREENSBORO, N.C.

Sarah Dowd went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 10-4 win over Iona on Saturday. The Penguins also dropped a 14-2 decision to Lehigh later in the day.

Senior Miranda Castiglione was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs while junior Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-4 to lead the Penguins’, who improve to 3-3, 12-hit attack.

Junior Caitlyn Minney struck out five in five innings pitched to pick up her third win of the season.

The Penguins struck quickly with a four spot in the top half of the first inning. Dowd led off the game with a double to right field and scored from third on Castiglione’s double to down the left-field line. Alexandria Gibson doubled to left field to plate Castiglione to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead. Cali Mikovich double to left-center field and her and Gibson scored on a throwing error.

In the top of the second, Jordan Macey led off the frame with a single through the left side and Dowd followed with her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, to put the Penguins up, 6-0.

Castiglione’s double to left field in the top of the fourth plated Moffatt, who singled, and gave the Penguins a 7-0 lead.

Against Lehigh, Maria Lacatena belted her second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second for the Penguins’ only runs.

YSU plays Iona and UNC-Greensboro today at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Penguins sixth in Horizon League Championships

ROCHESTER, MICH.

The YSU swimming and diving program concluded competition at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.

YSU finished sixth by scoring 353 points for the meet. Oakland won the event with an impressive 827.5 points while Milwaukee was second with 628.5. A final push moved the Penguins into sixth, 2.5 points ahead of Cleveland State.

Leading the way for the Penguins was Viktoria Orosz who finished third in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.90.

In three-meter dive Bec Stafford was third with a score of 276.60 while Bethany Glick finished seventh with a 250.15.

Freshman Zsani Csado placed fourth in the 200 butterfly posting a school-record time of 2:02.77. The previous mark was 2:04.00 by Aranda.

Sophomore Madison Aranda concluded a strong meet placing sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 17:11.36.

Senior Hannah Reynolds closed out her career with a 12th-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a career-best time of 2:22.84.

To close out the championships, YSU was sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a school-record time of 3:28.03.

Penguins drop doubleheader on road against Fresno State
