EVENTS OF THE DAY


Here is a breakdown of the events from the Oakhill pretrial hearing in Cleveland:

9 a.m.: Pretrial is supposed to start, but attorneys from both sides immediately go into the judge’s chambers.

10 a.m.: Murmurs of a possible plea bargain.

10:20 a.m.: Court convenes with talk of plea bargain struck with Youngstown Mayor John A. McNally and ex-Mahoning County Auditor Michael V. Sciortino. The discussion and explanation of the plea bargain takes more than an hour.

11:40 a.m.: Martin Yavorcik meets again with prosecutors behind closed doors.

Noon: McNally talks to the media about the plea agreement saying he was adamant that it not include a provision forcing him to resign as mayor.

12:30 p.m.: Yavorcik said a deal hasn’t been struck and he’s ready to go to trial Monday. But the case is postponed until March 14.

2:45 p.m.: Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras calls for McNally, a fellow Democrat, to resign.
