2 area divers finish in Top 10 at state

CANTON

Two area divers finished in the Top 10 of the Division II state tournament on Thursday at the Branin Natartorium.

Jefferson’s Sidney O’Donnell finished fifth after her three dives while East Palestine’s Faith Anderson was ninth.

O’Donnell’s score was 440, 38.35 points behind state champion Claire Schuermann of Kettering Alter. Anderson’s total was 406.85.

Canfield swimmers advance to finals

CANTON

Three Canfield relay teams advanced to today’s finals in the Division II swimming state tournament at the Branin Natartorium.

The 200 medley and 200 freestyle teams (Cullen Brady, Matthew Bogen, Alec Gaetano, Ben Brucoli) qualified as did the 400 freestyle relay squad (Jared Rothbauer, Bobby Kutsch, Lake Bennett, Kamran Sarac).

Bogen also qualified for the finals in the 100 breaststroke.

YSU track athletes sweep Horizon honors

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State track and field program swept the last week of the Horizon League Athletes of the Week. Chad Zallow, Conner Neu, Amber Eles and Jaynee Corbett were selected following their record-setting performances at the Zips Invitational.

For the men, Zallow was selected the Running Athlete of the Week and Neu was chosen Field Athlete of the Week. His time of 7.69 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles is the second-fastest time in the country. It’s the third time he’s won the award.

Neu had a toss of 21.78 meters to take first in the weight throw.

For the women, Eles was honored with Running Athlete of the Week and Corbett was tabbed Field Athlete of the Week. Eles broke the YSU school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55 second.

Brookfield ticket sale

Tickets for the Brookfield-Newton Falls girls basketball game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ravenna High School are on sale today at Brookfield High School. Prices for the Division III district final are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Fitch’s Kusky earns top honor

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Fitch High School senior thrower Logan Kusky has been named National Performer of the Week by Mile Split USA.

At the Spire Showcase on Feb. 13 in Geneva, Kusky threw 77 feet º inches in the weight throw, breaking Billy Price’s school record.

Kusky’s throw was the third longest in Ohio history and ranks him first in Ohio and second in the nation for this winter’s indoor track. He is a member and president of the National Honor Society.

YSU relay team sets school record

ROCHESTER, MINN.

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team opened up the Horizon League Championships strong setting a school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay at the Oakland Aquatic Center.

YSU finished a program-best third in the race with a time of 7:27.56, which broke the mark of 7:36.57 set last year by 9.01 seconds. Oakland was first with a meet-record time of 7:17.13 while Milwaukee was second at 7:23.62.

The swimmers are sophomore Madison Aranda, sophomore Viktoria Orosz Zsani Csado and Kolbrun Jonsdottir.

After the opening night, the Golden Grizzlies are first with 74 points, Milwaukee is second with 66, Wright State is third with 64 and YSU is tied with UIC, Cleveland State and Green Bay for fourth with 56 points.

Umpires set meetings for baseball, softball

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Metro Umpire Association will hold OHSAA baseball and softball meetings on Sunday at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road. The baseball meeting will begin at 1 p.m., followed by softball at 2:15 p.m.
