Canfield High School choir students welcomed family and friends to “the happiest place on Earth” as they presented their Disney Spectacular on Jan. 30. Under the direction of Kelly Scurich, student members of the Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble and One Octave Higher Ensemble performed medleys from several classic Disney movies, including “The Little Mermaid,” “The Lion King” and “Frozen.”
The choirs opened the show with Disney Spectacular Part One, which started with “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “How D’Ye Do and Shake Hands,” “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo,” “I’ve Got No Strings,” “Feed the Birds,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Step in Time,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
The students continued with selections from “The Little Mermaid,” including “Fathoms Below,” “Part of Your World,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea.” Next, the students performed selections from “The Lion King,” including “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”
The choirs closed out Disney Spectacular Part One with selections from “Frozen,” including “Frozen Heart,” “For the First Time in Forever,” “Love is an Open Door,” “In Summer,” “He’s a Fixer Upper” and “Let it Go.”
The choirs started Disney Spectacular Part Two with “Heigh-Ho” and went into “Whistle While You Work.” The choirs continued with “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” “Candle on the Water,” “Give a Little Whistle,” “The Bare Necessities,” “Ballad of Davy Crockett,” “I’m Late,” “It’s a Small World” and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
The students closed their performance with a surprise appearance of Mickey Mouse while they sang “Mickey Mouse March.”
Disney Spectacular ensemble/soloists included sopranos Camille Bagnola, Rosie Bresson, Cara DeChurch, Lexi Denny, Helen Neff and Maddie Urig; altos Ally Cooper, Kate Hartshorn, Harmeet Kaur, Taylor Mead, Nicole Schmidt and Haley Tura; basses Alex Kluchar, Andrew Letscher, Nick Palermo and Jonathan Scurich, and tenors Sam Accordino, Andrew Kern, David Labra and Alex Sanders.
The show was choreographed by Scurich, with Courtney Larson on the keyboard, Nate Gelfand on bass and Stephen Ley on drums. The sound and lighting crew included Jeff Mentzer, Jenna Varley, Cailin Shindle, Matt Stevens, Lena Angelilli and Elena Merhaut.
Prior to the performance, the Canfield Choral Boosters offered a Disney Spectacular tasting event in the high school cafeteria featuring local and regional restaurant specialties. Local caterers and restaurants offering up their specialties included A La Cart Catering, Ange Netta’s Caf and Catering, Belleria Bar and Grill, Canfield Giant Eagle, Chick-Fil-A, Christopher’s Downtown, Ghossain’s Bakery, Giannios Candy, Canfield Inner Circle, Inspired Catering by Kravitz, Kim’s Confections, Peaberry’s Caf and Bakery, Piccadilly Parlor, Saadey’s Place and YOLO Grille and Taproom.
Several Canfield Choral Boosters members volunteered throughout the evening to ensure the success of the event.
“This is the fourth year of our tasting event. This year the tasting sold out, and was even over sold. We have 15 food vendors here tonight, with about half being repeats. We very much appreciate their support of our program and couldn’t do this without them,” said Mary Vallas, Canfield Choral Boosters treasurer and chairperson of the Disney Spectacular.
The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the choirs. Proceeds from the evening go toward choir expenses, such as payment for accompanists, competitions, upkeep of robes and tuning pianos.
